How to Write Orchestral Sketch StaffPad #1 | Composer Music Toolkit

Gh0stwrit3r · August 27, 2020

It’s been almost two months since my last video. OMG! It’s time to return to Youtube and do some new videos about how to write orchestral music for film and video. And I’m quite excited about the upcoming ones! It’s all about developing an orchestral sketch.

This summer I fell in love with StaffPad. A beautiful app for sketching out orchestral ideas on my iPad pro. A creative and mind-blowing experience that can result in awesome orchestral mockups. It also confronted me with my lack of good music notation and music theory. And I really needed to get comfort with this new workflow. It is totally different than working within a DAW.

Out of my comfort zone

So I took some time off. Invested in my skills and education. Still doing that on a daily basis! Very exciting! In the upcoming videos I’ll show you my progress. You will be a witness of my personal growth. My ups and downs. My good choices and the bad ones. This is about learning, experimenting, getting out of your comfort zone. Working with counterpoint, motivic writing, melody development, functional and modal harmony, orchestration. Wow!

From piano to orchestra: an orchestral sketch every week!

I try to write a simple melody on the piano every week and develop that to a fully orchestrated version. We go from sweet, romantic, to epic and heroic. From old classical baroque to modern film scores. I’ll cover the whole spectrum.

This week we kick-off with the first orchestral sketch. I hope you enjoy it!
