Guess the Orchestral Instruments

Gh0stwrit3r · February 27, 2020

It’s time for Episode 2. of the “Can you recognise the orchestral instruments“? A wonderful exercise to get familiar with the sound of orchestral instruments and combinations of instruments.

Don’t forget to hit that like button if you appreciate this video. Also sub to my channel for my music and videos about how to write orchestral music for film.

Ear training for better orchestration

When you start to do ear training more often you will definitely see progress in how you transcribe scores. Your orchestration skills will get better. And finally your compositions will get better.

I try to do this exercise on a weekly basis. Picking a composition and listen to it. Write down the instruments. And after that studying the score to see if I recognised them correctly.

It’s not easy, but great fun to do! The more you do it, the better you’ll get!

The sound of orchestral instruments

So let’s enjoy this ear training exercise. It’s based on my composition called “Valse Mystique”. This music track is going to be released world wide on the 8th of March 2020. So this exercise is actually a small premiere also!

And let us know in the comments on Youtube how many instruments you recognised correctly and if you’re satisfied with that.

[…] This time I chose for a chord progression way of working. Now let’s do a first listening. We start with the chord progression and then the fully orchestrated version. And when you listen to both, are you able to recognise this chord progression? A simple and great listening and transcribing exercise! […]
